In addition to the summer San Juan Hut system which we guide they also have a series of ski huts right outside Ridgway. Jen and I decided to take Kalden on his first backcountry ski trip to the Burn Hut. It is about a 6 mile ski into this hut and it’s pretty much all up hill. The ski in took us about 4 hours and we made it just before the snow started dumping!

Kalden got to play with his snowboard in some deep powder up there, so deep in fact he couldn’t move! I broke a trail down a slop for him and after a few runs he cold get sliding on it. After a few hours of that it was time to settle into the hut for the evening and fire up some hot choclate and Baily’s.

The Hut’s are such a great resource to have right here above town and I highly recommend a trip like this to anyone. However, if you do want to make some backcountry turns while up there then a minimum of 2 night’s is required.
